Thirty-six years ago today, while debating Democratic challenger Jimmy Carter, President Gerald Ford proclaimed, “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and there never will be under a Ford administration!” Making matters worse, instead of copping to the gaffe and reversing himself, he carried on the point for another minute or so, even when challenged by the debate moderator.
